San Giulio island
The current basilica dates back to the 12th century and was modeled on the ancient cathedral of Novara. Inside, not to be missed, in addition to many beautiful frescoes and paintings, a very rare and equally precious pulpit carved in green serpentine marble from Oira, supported by 4 much older columns. The pulpit is decorated with symbols dear to Christianity and a male figure that could represent the abbot Guglielmo da Volpiano born on the island in 962.
The island's charm is undeniable, and it is also shrouded in a slightly mysterious air, thanks to the presence of the Mater Ecclesiae Abbey where, compared to the first 6 cloistered nuns who resided there in 1973, there are now around 80 nuns who live in total silence with the Mother Abbess Anna Maria Canopi, the most important living female figure in the Catholic Church.
